Vice President insists on modernization of agro sector

KATHMANDU, Sept 27: Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun has stressed the need of modernizing agricultural sector, remaining as the backbone of nation's economy. 

Inaugurating an exhibition of dairy products and dairy-processing equipments organized by the Dairy Association here today, the Vice President said the contribution of agro sector to the country's gross domestic product stood at 34 per cent and modernization of this sector could bring drastic change in farmers' life with making significant contribution to nation's economy. 

"There is a huge gap between the prices getting milk farmers and paying consumers to milk suppliers," he said, drawing the attention of the authority concerned towards bridging such gap. 

Secretary at the Ministry of Livestock Development Uttam Kumar Bhattarai said the Ministry was working out on a 20-year strategic action plan, aiming at promoting agricultural sector. The action plan was likely come into force from the current fiscal year, he said. 

Acting President of the Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Bhawani Rana said the Dairy Association was playing a reading role in the promotion of dairies and livelihood improvement of farmers. 

Presently, 4.8 million liters of milk is produced throughout the country daily and the capital alone consumes 450,000 liters. RSS
