In a program organized under the coordination of Nepal Communist Party (Mashal) General Secretary Mohan Bikram Singh, different leaders highlighted the roles played by the nonagenarian during his 65 years of association with the communist party.
Born in 1975 BS in Rajbara VDC of Pyuthan District, Gurung participated and led various communist movements in different districts and fought against contemporary rulers from various forums. During the course of his political career, he faced tortures, imprisonment, among other difficulties.
Addressing the program, Gurung expressed his happiness at being honored and wished for the unification of all communist forces. "The communist parties should learn from their past mistakes and come together," he said. In the program, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli also called for the unification of communist parties and pledged to contribute in the process. UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal said, "If we don't reduce the gap among the communist parties, it will benefit the reactionary forces." He expressed dissatisfaction over some of the so-called senior communist leaders who stood against unification.
The program was attended by other communist leaders CPN Revolutionary Maoist Chairman Mohan Baidya, Deputy Prime Minister Chitra Bahdur KC, CP Mainali, among others. At the program, Universal Medical College declared to bear all the cost of medical treatment of the nonagenarian Gurung, who is suffering from pneumonia and tuberculosis.
