KATHMANDU, May 17: Vehicular movement in Kathmandu valley has been paralyzed after police prevented public vehicles from running at several locations inside the valley on Monday morning in view of a huge protest rally organized by Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist).

Creating about 34 diversion points around the Ring Road in the valley, police instructed public vehicle drivers to divert their motors outside the Ring Road. [break]

Maoists have planned huge rallies to lead from seven locations – Gongabu Bus Park, Koteshwar, Lagankhel, Balkhu, Maharajgunj, Chabahil and Kalimati toward the heart of the city at Ratnapark at about 11 a.m., according to police. The rally is scheduled to converge at Tundikhel at 1 p.m.

Police said that vehicles will be diverted to outside the city and will be allowed to enter inside the Ring Road depending on the security situation in the city.

Maoist-affiliated trade union has warned the micro bus drivers not to take out their vehicles.

Meanwhile, Maoist ministers will start a rally from Shanti Vatika at Ratna Park at noon. All the Maoist ministers -- except Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal -- will be participating in the rally that will head toward the president´s office at Shital Niwas, according to Dr Baburam Bhattarai´s aide Bishwadeep Pandey.

Maoists have organized the mass gathering to protest against the President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav’s step to reinstate the army chief, who was sacked by Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who is also chairman of the Unified Maoist party.
