KATHMANDU, July 5: Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand has said that the government should prepare to hand over the security of the Kathmandu Valley to the federal police keeping in mind the growing security sensitivities.

He made the remarks while responding to a query raised by lawmakers on a bill to amend the Nepal Police and Province Police Act, 2022 at a meeting of the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee under the House of Representatives on Tuesday.

He reiterated that the government had no intention to reduce the powers of the provincial police to the federal police in the bill. Stating that the incidents of security sensitivity are increasing in the capital Kathmandu on a daily basis, Home Minister Khand reminded that the government is compelled to increase police mobilization for the security of the citizens in such incidents.

Speaking at a similar meeting, Yashoda Gurung Subedi, an MP from the ruling CPN (Maoist Center), expressed her dissatisfaction over the government's move to reduce the powers of the provincial police. She also said that the existing legal system is sufficient for the security of the capital Kathmandu.

Similarly, Khagraj Adhikari, an MP from the main opposition party CPN-UML, warned the government not to neglect the security of the Immigration Department. He also opined that it would not be wrong to make the legal arrangement to hand over the security of the Kathmandu Valley to the federal police as everything has to be done in collaboration with the federal, province and local levels. Adhikari also mentioned that the security sensitivity of the capital Kathmandu is increasing with the changing international environment.
