DOTI, March 15:  Scores of women have been suffering from uterine prolapse in the far-western region.

Despite an acute problem the women have been suffering from, the patients prefer to suffer to seeking treatment for their problem due to social embarrassment.

A 60-year-old woman of Dipayal Silgadhi Municipality had a problem of uterine prolapse 30 years ago. She did not tell anybody about her problem but preferred to suffer silently.

By the time she turned up for treatment at a health camp organized at Doti, she had already five children.

As the time passed by, the uterine started coming down. One day, her daughter-in-law knew about her problem and took her to District Hospital, Doti.

She underwent a surgery for her prolapsed uterine during the health camp this time.

This is only the tip of the iceberg. There are several such cases which are yet to surface.  Scores of women are suffering from uterine prolapse for years but they do not dare go to the hospital for treatment due to social stigma.

The other sad part is that only 110 women turned up to undergo surgery of uterine prolaspe at the health camp that was run for a week in Doti recently.

According to Ram Bahadur Malla, field coordinator of Nepalgunj Medical College, the women in the age group between 40 to 85 have been suffering from uterine prolaspe over 10 years.

Underage marriage, early motherhood and unsafe sexual intercourse are attributed to the uterine prolapse, according to Malla.
