According to a press statement issued by the US Embassy in Kathmandu, Ambassador DeLisi congratulated Ms Koirala and the entire staff of Maiti Nepal for winning the award and praised their work of rescuing and rehabilitating the victims of trafficking. [break]
The envoy noted that that the award is not just a testament to Ms Koirala´s remarkable achievement, but also a call to the rest of the world to support vigilant communities and dedicated organizations such as Maiti Nepal in their fight against human trafficking.
The statement said Ambassador DeLisi and Ms Koirala welcomed the government of Nepal´s commitment in combating human trafficking and expressed their hope that the government would move quickly and vigorously to prosecute those who have been arrested for the crime.
There was also a discussion on the importance of addressing domestic trafficking and the abuses suffered by girls and young women in dance bars, cabin restaurants and guest houses that are proliferating throughout the country.
On the occasion, the envoy assured Koirala of the U.S. government´s continued commitment and dedication to address this critical area of human rights violation.
