KATHMANDU: Special Representative of the Secretary-General Ian Martin Tuesday wrote to the Ministry of Defence that any new recruitment by the Nepal Army or the Maoist army would be a breach of the Ceasefire Code of Conduct, CPA and Agreement on Monitoring the Management of Arms and Armies, UNMIN said in a statement.

“UNMIN has expressed this view to the previous government in the context of earlier reports of new recruitment by the Nepal Army in 2007, and has also drawn the attention of the Minister of Defense in the current government to its position,” said the statement issued by UNMIN.

The reminder by the Special Representative has come after dailies including The Himalayan Times and the Annapurna Post carried new reports Tuesday that quoted Maoist deputy commander Chandra Prakash Khanal as saying that the Maoist army plans to induct 16,000 more combatants in its ranks. The news reports said Khanal also accused the state army of carrying on with recruitment.
