University team claims first gold

DHANGADHI, Feb 29: University team claimed its maiden gold during the Sixth National Games in women´s basketball on Wednesday. The University team defeated Eastern Region 30-19 in the final match held in Dhangadhi to win the title.



Mrinalini Shrestha of the University team topscored with 16 points in the final as the winners bounced back from second set down to win the match 10-5, 3-6, 11-26-6. Supriya Thapa scored seven points for Eastern Region. [break]Anusha Malla Thakuri of the University team was adjudged the Most Valubale Player.



In the third place play-off, Central Region defeated Western Region 45-28 to win bronze. Sneha Shrestha scored 18 points for the winning team.



Women´s volleyball



Title favorites Nepal Police Club (NPC) and Western Region advanced into the semifinals of women´s volleyball during the Sixth National Games in contrasting fashion on Wednesday.



Both NPC and Western Region have won all three of their matches but NPC had a hard time dispatching off Armed Police Force (APF) 25-22, 25-21, 23-25, 26-24 in Group B. On the other hand, Western Region eased past Eastern Region 25-5, 25-11, 25-6 in Group A. The victory means both the teams will not face each other until the final.



In a competitive match on Wednesday, NPC led by captain Neeta Shah won the first two sets before APF staged a fight back. APF didn´t allow NPC back in the game in the third set. The fourth set was equally thrilling with APF taking a 14-16 lead midway but the experienced NPC team fought back to turn the tide in its favor.



Despite the defeat, APF also advanced into the semifinals as the runner-up of Group B. APF next faces Western Region, the winner of Group A.



Central Region completed the semifinal line-up after defeating Mid Western Region 25-6, 25-4, 25-11 to finish second in Group A. It will lock horns with NPC.



Karate



APF dominated karate matches during the Sixth National Games winning a total of six golds, one silver and six bronze medals. Central Region finished second with four golds, four silver and three bronzes while PLA settled for overall third position with three golds, four silver and six bronzes.



On Wednesday, Sunil Lama of Central Region defeated Rabindra Karki 9-7 in the final of men´s U-55 kg to win gold. Bishnu Shrestha of APF and Dinesh Shrestha of PLA finished third.



In the men´s U-84 kg, Bhim Bahadur Tamang of Central Region and Prem Raj Sapkota of PLA secured the top two positions respectively.





Audience watching karate match.



In the men´s U-75 kg, Dipendra Deuba of Far Western Region clinched gold defeating Jeevan Malla of Western Region 9-7. Narayan Kaji Rai of NPC and Sunil Thing of Central Region settled for the third position.



In the women´s section, Roji Nagarkoti of APF defeated Sushma Gurung of Western Region 9-5 to clinch gold in U-55 kg. Shanti Lama of NPC and Anupa Magar of PLA finished third.



Ganga Devi Adhikari of APF won gold in women´s U-68 kg category in karate. Adhikari defeated Sunita Rai of Eastern Region 15-7 in the final held at Dhangadhi Stadium. Sita Budha of Central Region and Kamala Kumari Thapa Magar of PLA Sports Club finished joint third. Sapana Lama of APF also won gold defeating Laxmi Bhatta 9-3 in women´s U-60 kg.



Judo



Central Region lifted judo title in individual category with seven gold medals on Wednesday. NPC finished second with six golds while Far Western Region secured the third position with four golds.



On Wednesday - the third day of judo competition - Ramesh Magar and Diwakar Basnet added two golds for Central Region to the overnight tally of five golds to top the medal tally.



Magar defeated all of his opponents in the league matches of men´s U-66 kg to win gold. Prakash Nepali of NPC finished second in the event while Suresh BK of Eastern Region and Rajan Rokaya of Far Western Region finished joint third.



In the men´s U-55 kg, Basnet won gold ahead of Far Western Region´s Bichhu Chaudhary, who settled for silver.







Aashish Ojha of Far Wesrern Region won gold in men´s above 100 kg while Sanjay Sahane of Mid Western Region finished second in the event.



In the Women´s section, Radha Devi Rai of NPC and Nabina Lama of Central Region secured the top two positions respectively in U-48 kg. Ishwari Bam of Far Western and Ritu Rana of Mid Western Region finished third.



Pramila Khadka of NPC won gold in women´s U-57 kg. Ranju Rai of Central Region finished second in the event. Debika Khadka of APF and Sharmila Giri of Mid Western Region both finished third.



Sunita Bohara of Far Western Region defeated Kamala Rai of Eastern Region to win gold in women´s above-78 kg.


Badminton



APF players dominated badminton matches on Wednesday to set up an all-APF semifinal line-up in the women´s category.



Pooja Shrestha of APF advanced into the semifinals defeating Sulochana Bhattaraj of Eastern Region 21-8, 21-11. She was joined in the semifinals Samjhana Khaling, who beat her club-mate Sikchhya Shrestha 21-15, 21-15.



Sabina Panthi also advanced with ease as she defeated Poonam Gurung of Western Region 21-11, 21-9. Nangsala Devi Tamang completed the semifinal line-up with a 21-11, 21-7 win over Durga Sharma of Far Western Region.



In the men´s section, Bikash Shrestha beat his club-mate Bishnu Katuwal 21-19, 21-11 to make it to the semifinals. In other quarterfinal matches, Ratnajit Tamang of APF fought from second set down to defeat Pankaj Chand of APF 21-10, 13-21, 21-10.



Likewise, Dipesh Dhami of APF upset Sajan Krishna Tamrakar of NPC 21-8, 20-22, 21-10. Ram Singh Chaudhari of Far Western Region eased past Indra Mahata of APF 21-11, 21-8.



In the men´s doubles, the pair of Ratnajit Tamang and Bishal Pradhan of APF secured semifinal berth defeating the pair of Ganesh Chand and Surya Thapa of NPC 21-9, 21-15.



Bishnu Katuwal teamed up with Deepak Bohara of NPC to beat Sahadev Khadka and Bivek Shrestha of APF 21-18, 21-15.



Likewise, the pair of Pankaj Chand and Indra Mahata of APF as well as Ram Rai and Suraj Maharjan of Central Region advanced into the semifinals winning their respective matches.



In the women´s doubles, the pair of Poonam Gurung and Prativa Gurung of Western Region made it to the semifinals defeating Durga Sharma and Ganga Bista of Far Western Region 21-14, 21-11.



The pair of Samjhana Khaling and Sabina Panthi, the pair of Pooja Shrestha and Nangsal Devi Tamang as well as the pair of Mina Shrestha and Sujana Shrestha , all of APF, advanced into the semifinals winning their respective matches.



In the mixed doubles, the pair of Nangsal Devi Tamang and Ratnajit Tamang of APF, the pair of Sujana Shrestha and Sahadev Khadka of APF, the pair of Pooja Shrestha and Indra Mahata of APF and the pair of Ram Rai and Tirna Rai of Central Region won their respective quarterfinal matches.


Women´s Kabaddi



NPC continued its dominance in women´s kabaddi defeating Eastern Region 22-12 to secure a berth in the final. NPC will lock horns for the title with Far Western Region, which defeated Central Region 43-28.



Handball



Western Region and Far Western Region advanced into the semifinals of handball as the winner and runner-up of Group A respectively. Likewise, APF and Central Region also made it to the semifinals after securing the tip two spots respectively in Group B after Wednesday´s matches.



During Wednesday´s league matches, Western Region defeated Far Western Region 30-17 but both teams qualified for the semifinals.



In other matches, Mid Western Region beat Eastern Region 19-14 while APF saw off APF Central Region 23-14.



Soft tennis



Central Region defeated NPC in men´s doubles of soft tennis to claim gold on Wednesday. The Central Region team comprising Manoj Subba and Sohan Dhaubadel beat the pair of Ashok Singh and Kamal Bhandari of NPC 5-3 in the final at Dhangadhi Stadium.



Dushyant Thapa and Raju Nagarkoti of Central Region and Shyam Lama and Krishna Raut of Eastern Region jointly finished third.



In the women´s doubles, Central Region defeated NPC to clinch gold. The Central Region team, which included Niru Kayastha and Rekha Tuladhar, beat NPC´s Kripa Sharma and Samriddhi Rimal.



The pair of Ritu Gurung and Priti Baral of Western Region as well as the pair of Shova Thapa and Avantika Shah of Far Western Region finished third.



Boxing



The quarterfinal matches of boxing in eight weight categories were held on Wednesday. In the men´s section, Shekhar Thapa of Central Region advanced into the semifinal beatingKapil Rai of Eastern Region in men´s above-91 kg.



Likewise, Min Prasad Jori (men´s 81 kg) of APF and Sovit Khatri (men´s 75 kg) of Central Region made it to the semifinals.



Maya Chaudhary of APF, Shanti Chaudhary of Kanchanpur, Geeta Thapa Magar of Salyan and Sunita Maharjan of Kathmandu advanced into the semifinals in women´s 51 kg after winning their respective matches.



Likewise, Rupa Lama of Kathmandu, Pramila Pandey of APF and Karuna Chand of Kanchanpur also won their respective quarterfinal matches in women´s 54 kg.

In the women´s 57 kg, Harka Maya Shrestha of Jhapa and Renukala Tamang of Sunsari secured semifinal berths. Bimala Chaudhary of Dang and Pramila Rai of Sunsari made it to the semifinals of women´s 60 kg. In the women´s 64 kg, Kopila Limbu of Dhankuta beat Mina Chaudhary of Kailali in the quarterfinal.



Taekwondo Union



Central Region is leading the medal tally of taekwondo union with nine golds. Western Region is second with two golds while the University team has secured one gold.



Taekwondo union was included in the National Games as a demonstration event but the National Sports Council announced on Wednesday that its medals counts will be included in the overall medal tally of the National Games following the union´s protest on Tuesday.



On Wednesday, Muskan Karki of Central Region won gold in women´s U-53 kg. Anita Tuladhar of Central Region and Anita Dulal of Central Region also won golds.



In the men´s section, Kumar Pun of Western Region, Manoj Sunar of Central Region, Sanjay Chaudhary of Central Region, Karan Singh Kathayat of Far Western Region and Prakash Thapalia of University team won golds in their respective matches.
