Unity offices under police control

KATHMANDU, May 18: Responding to media reports about fraudulent activities of Unity Life International - a pyramid-based network marketing company -- police on Tuesday sealed different Unity offices across the country and arrested some of its officials. Bank accounts of some of the officials have also been frozen.



Our Butwal correspondent Sher Bahadur KC said police have arrested chairman of Unity´s Lumbini regional office Rom Lal Giri and local president Khem Raj Regmi. Rupandehi said the duo was arrested from Bhairahawa for necessary interrogation. Unity´s staffers themselves closed the office ´for a few days´, pasting notice on the door after their clients started approaching them for refund of their deposits. [break]



Chhabi Lal Banjade, chief of Rupandehi District Police Office, said they had taken Unity´s local office under their control for continued surveillance. Unity is about 40,000 clients in Lumbini zone.



Police also raided the office of Sahayog Nepal, another network marketing company following Unity´s model, at Milan Chowk of Butwal and arrested its business development officer Radha Devi Ghimire. Sahayog Nepal has been in operation in Butwal for the last one year.



In Nepalgunj, infuriated Unity clients have picketed Unity´s branch office at Surkeht Road, demanding refund of their membership fee. Senior employees of Unity fled the office after people started thronging the office. Unity has about 5,000 members in Nepalgunj. According to our correspondent, a police team has been deployed at the Unity´s office to prevent vandalism.



Our Baglung correspondent Dilip Paudel said bank accounts of Unity officials Mahendra KC, Gobinda Raj Bhandari, Ganga Sahani, Jeev Raj Joshi, Krishna Pathak, Murari KC, Dhanya KC, Ishwari Acharya, Kiran KC, Mahendra Acharya and Krishna Bahadur Shrestha, and Unity Hospital Development Committee have been frozen.



Unity´s clients have closed Assurance Unity Life Hospital in the district and handed over its key to Baglung CDO Keshav Raj Ghimire in the presence of local journalists. Doctors at the hospital have referred the patients to Baglung District Hospital. Baglung police have been keeping vigil at Unity´s Baglung branch.



Though Unity members have been pushing Unity officers to refund their money, acting administrator of Unity´s Baglung Branch has been saying the he was not in a position to take any decision. Unity has over 10,000 members in Baglung.



Meanwhile, Kaski police has mobilized police teams to arrest office bearers of Unity´s regional office in Pokhara as per the direction of district administration office. Hundreds of Unity victims thronged Unity´s local office on the day, pressing Unity officials to refunded their money.



Unity has collected over Rs 340 million from its 23,000 clients in Pokhara and its adjoining areas.
