UN committed to fight diarrhea

KATHMANDU, Aug 18: Relief community, including UN agencies, has expressed their commitment to provide continued and additional support to the government to strengthen the response to diarrheal outbreak in western Nepal.



The relief community, international non-governmental agencies and local partners have been working closely to support the government´s efforts to control the spread of diarrhea, the UN said in a statement on Tuesday. Besides, humanitarian agencies are providing support at the central, regional, district and local levels by providing relief materials and technical support, the statement added.



Altogether 282 people have died of diarrhea in 157 village development committees in 17 districts in the mid and far-western regions since May 5. Jajarkot and Rukum districts have been the worst hit. Though the numbers of cases and affected districts have increased, deaths due to diarrhea have significantly decreased, the statement read.



The UN further said that the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, Save the Children, CONCERN, MERLIN, LWF, Water Aid, World Vision, CARE, DFID/CSP, GTZ, Oxfam and IRD are all working closely with the government and their local NGO partners to provide assistance to the affected communities.



Similarly, the relief community have also provided their help in areas such as drugs and medical supplies, disease surveillance, treatment of drinking water, awareness on hygiene in three critical periods.
