Bishnu Rijal of the UML’s publicity department told myrepublica.com that an interim presidium will be elected on Tuesday to act as the executive body, during the 6-day convention that opened on Monday, in absence of the main body. The presidium is most likely to be chaired by Amrit Bohora. [break]
The 1800-plus UML delegates will also form an election committee headed by Agni Kharel. A rapporteuring committee will also be formed to take notes of the convention.
Rijal said General Secretary Jhala Nath Khanal is going to formally table his political document before the delegates for discussion pending approval. Likewise, leader Amrit Bohora will table statute amendment proposal.
The delegates will be divided into 18 to 20 groups to discuss on the political document and the statute amendment. The delegates are hopeful that the convention won’t be prolonged beyond February 21 as planned. “Leaders are exercising to come to a consensus,” a delegate told myrepublica.com. “The younger generation of the party has been putting pressure on the leadership to reconcile.”
Though three senior leaders (Khanal, Madhav Nepal and KP Sharma Oli) are likely to vie for the top post of party chairman, it is still not clear who will emerge the victor or the consensus candidate.
