DHAKA, Aug 6: The President has dissolved the current Parliament and ordered the release of Begum Khaleda Zia, former PM and leader of the main opposition Party Bangladesh Nationalist, from House arrest.

Bangladesh’s parliament has been dissolved, a day after longtime Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country after weeks of deadly unrest.

Organisers of student-led protests are scheduled to meet army officials, insisting will not accept a military-led government.

Protesters say Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus should head the interim government.

A spokesperson for Yunus has reportedly said he had accepted the request to be an adviser to the interim government. The 84-year-old laureate would return to Bangladesh “immediately” after a minor medical procedure in Paris, the spokesperson was quoted as saying by Reuters news agency.
