KATHMANDU, Dec 5: CPN-UML wings -- Youth Association Nepal (YAN) and All Nepal National Free Student Union (ANNFSU) -- withdrew the general strike called for Tuesday after the prime minister assured them of addressing their concerns.

Representatives from the youth and student wings of the opposition party agreed to withdraw the general strike after Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai agreed to release four ANNFSU cadres arrested during protests on Sunday. [break]

"The prime minister also promised us to halt the programs run under the government´s Youth Self-Employment Fund and to probe irregularities in releasing money from the Fund," Rachana Khadka, ANNFSU secretary, told Republica.

Cadres from UML youth and student wings have been protesting against the government accusing the finance minister of randomly doling out money to Maoist cadres from the state-run Fund.
