KATHMANDU, May 2: The CPN-UML has made public ‘the first list’ of its mayoral candidates for the first phase of local elections on Monday, on the eve of filing candidacies with the Election Commission.
A standing committee meeting of the main opposition party picked mayoral candidates for Pokhara and Chitwan metropolitan cities and Hetuda sub-metropolitan city. The party is yet to finalize the candidates for Kathmandu and Lalitpur, two other metropolitan cities.

Issuing a press statement, the party has said that it has picked Man Bahadur GC as its mayoral candidate for Pokhara, while Manju Gurung has been selected as the party’s deputy mayoral candidate for the lake city. Similarly, Devi Gyawali has been named as the party’s mayoral candidate for Chitwan and Divya Acharya as the deputy mayor.
The party has selected Hari Bahadur Mahat as its mayor candidate for Hetauda, a city that has big support base of UML. The party has not yet picked deputy mayor candidate for Hetauda. UML Secretary Yogesh Bhattarai said that Mina Lama could be the party’s deputy mayoral candidate for Hetuda.
“We couldn’t make public all names today due to some technical reasons. The party will unveil the full list of candidate by Tuesday morning,” Bhattarai told Republica.
