The party has called politburo meeting for Saturday to discuss the matter. "Party´s stance on prime ministerial election is one of the eight agenda items that are under discussion in the ongoing CC meeting. The politburo will come up with specific ideas on finding solution to the ongoing political deadlock," the party´s politburo member Bishnu Rimal told Republica. He said the issue will be discussed in the party´s Standing Committee (SC) as well prior to deliberations in the politburo. The final decision, however, will be taken by the CC.
Once the SC and the politburo hold discussions on the matter it will be much easier to take a decision from the 116-member CC as well, said another UML leader.
UML lawmakers cast their votes in neutral position during previous four rounds of prime ministerial voting.
UML is already divided over whether to stick to its neutral stance or review its earlier decision to give an outlet to the current political deadlock. Eighteen CC members at a meeting last week had written a note of dissent demanding another CC meeting with a view to end the stalemate prior to the fifth round voting in parliament that has been postponed for August 23.
While a faction of the party led by Chairman Jhalanath Khanal is for sticking to neutral stance, leaders close to party heavyweight KP Sharma Oli are against prolonging the deadlock for an indefinite period. UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Nepali Congress Vice President Ram Chandra Poudel are currently in the prime ministerial race.
