UML leader Alam declared dead

KATHMANDU, Oct 10: CPN-UML leader Mohammud Alam, who was undergoing treatment at Maharajgunj-based TU Teaching Hospital after he was shot at last Friday, has been declared dead.



"Assaulted Alam’s heart beats were slowing down until it completely stopped at 12:30. The doctors attending him, then, declared Alam dead in front of his family members this afternoon," said Dr Subas Acharya, in-charge at Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital.[break]







Alam, a UML candidate from Bara-4 for the upcoming Constituent Assembly (CA) elections, was shot at  by a motorbike-borne gang at Lipanimal VDC-4 of Bara district. At around 11 am, two unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle had shot Alam at Chainpur Chowk along the Pathlaiya-Birgunj road while he was talking on the phone.



According to eyewitnesses, the attackers, who used a motorbike with Indian number plate, had fled toward Birgunj after shooting Alam.



Alam, who was serioulsy injured in the incident, was immediately taken to Birgunj-based National Medical College. Later on, he had been airlifted to Kathmandu from Birgunj by a Nepal Army helicopter for further treatment.



He was a UML central committee member as well as chairman of Muslim Ittehad Organization.



Meanwhile, According to UML party office, the body of Alam is scheduled to be kept at its party headquarters, Balkhu from 2.30 to 3.00 this afternoon for paying last tribute.



Alam had contested in the previous CA polls from the same constituency but had lost to Tarai Madhes Democratic Party (TMDP) Joint General Secretary Jitendra Sonal.
