“The current government has failed over peace and the new constitution,” said Chairman Khanal while addressing a Lumbini Zonal gathering of UML party cadres. [break]“There must be a national government in place to avert serious political disaster.”
Khanal said he had made efforts to unite the party in a practical fashion as disputes and factionalism within the UML made it impossible to give the country a political outlet. He said that since unity within the UML is to be unity in the true sense of the word, unity will be maintained in the party organization from top to bottom.
“Some people have publicized this effort as a new equation. But it is not any new equation. It is a lesson learnt from the past,” he said.
Khanal said that unity efforts were made as growing differences within the party after iits Butwal convention gave birth to groupism and factionalism, resulting in a great loss to the party as a whole. “These efforts were an attempt to send out a message of unity within the party,” he further said.
Senior party leader K P Sharma Oli said that the newly-established parties had become dominant in Nepali politics as the UML did not do some serious thinking on time. “But the days of newly-established parties are gone,” he claimed.
Citing an agreement among top leaders not to raise the enmities of the past, he directed party cadres to implement the decision even at the lower levels of the party organization.
UML Vice-chairman Bamdev Gautam acknowledged that he had made several mistakes in the past. “I split the party under my leadership. A campaign was held against the Madhav Kumar Nepal-led government,” he said. “But I have undertaken self-criticism as all these acts were a weakness on my part.”
During the function, the district chairmen of six various districts in Lumbini Zone made presentions about the party´s organizational situation and the problems faced due to the differences that existed among the top leaders. They stressed the need for genuine unity in the party.
Meanwhile, the UML has expedited preparations at Birtamod, Jhapa for holding a mass gathering.
The gathering to be organized when national cadre come together for the Youth Association Nepal gathering on Friday is expected to start giving out a message of unity to the cadres.
