John Holbrook, 15, a pupil at St Laurence School in Bradford on Avon, is a member of one of two teams of 15 from the school due to take part in the World Challenge during August 2010, Katie Adams reports for www.thisiswiltshire.co.uk.
The World Challenge offers trips around the globe to school children who can put something back in to the communities they visit, as well as experiencing new things and working as a team.
The teenager will be going to Nepal with his schoolmates and said raising the funds to go on the trip is all part of the challenge.
His father, Martin, paid for the trip upfront to ensure John’s place, and the teenager is now busy raising the funds to show he can collect the £3,500 himself and repay his dad, and is organizing sponsored events and weekend jobs.
John said: “Two teams from the school are taking part and we will be responsible for everything we do as part of the challenge, from compass work, activities, cleaning and building.
“We all did a 15k sponsored run in Surrey and I raised £600 from that through friends and neighbors. We will also be doing bag packing in Sainsbury’s in Bradford on Avon later in the year and another run next year.”
John, a member of the Melksham Air Cadets, is now hoping to hear from anyone who can offer him weekend or holiday work to help with his fundraising.
He said: “I want to thank everyone who sponsored me for the run last month from the villages of Shaw and Whitley and Purlpit.”
