Minister Desmond, who wrapped up his two-day visit to Nepal on Friday, also lauded the determination of the Nepalese people to rebuild their lives after the crisis."The effects of the recent devastating earthquakes are clear to see and my deepest sympathies are with those who have lost their families, friends, homes and jobs. I have been struck by the Nepalese people's determination to rebuild their lives after this crisis and it is the memory of this strength that will remain with me," the minister said.
This was the second visit of Minister Desmond to Nepal.
"The UK has been a longstanding friend of Nepal and we will continue to stand by the country through this difficult time as it recovers. This means helping rebuild vital infrastructure, supporting people back into work and ensuring the most vulnerable, including women and children, are protected," a UK embassy statement quoted Desmond as saying on his departure.
During his stay in Nepal, the minister held meetings with the government, NGOs and UN partners and commended them on the role they played to ensure vital humanitarian assistance to those in need in the aftermath of the earthquake. Among other things, Minister Swayne also examined the DFID funded disaster preparedness program that had been preparing for a possible earthquake over the last three years and visited the site of pre-positioned emergency goods such as blankets, tarpaulins and sanitation products.
