BUTWAL, May 15: Former prime minister and Vice-chairman of UCPN (Maoist) Dr Baburam Bhattarai on Wednesday said that he couldn´t perform as government head in the way he would have liked because of non- cooperation from the judiciary.

“State power comprises the executive along with the legislative and judiciary but the judiciary was not in favor of the government. So our attempts to perform were hindered frequently by the president and the judiciary,” he said in Butwal. [break]

Addressing a student union election campaign organized by the party´s student wing in Rupandehi, he said to the students, “We need to gain a two-third majority of the total seats in the upcoming CA election. So begin preparations to gain such a majority”.

The result of the student union election is sure to influence the upcoming CA election and help build public opinion, he said, recalling some attempts made in the past by the two governments led by the UCPN (Maoist).

Political leadership must shift to students and the young but in recent days it was sad to see the students´ increasing lack of faith in and hatred towards politics, he said, adding that students should take up the political leadership because otherwise the situation was sure to become worse.

Pointing out drawbacks in education policy, he said, “Universities and colleges produce the unemployed. So our party stance is to provide unemployment allowance to educated students if the government is not able to provide them proper jobs.”
