ITAHARI, Jan 13: Nepal Rare Birds Council (NRBC) has confirmed two more new species of bird in Nepal, taking the total number of birds in Nepal to 871.

Ornithologists have discovered Ashy Minivet in Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve (KTWR) and Indian Vulture in Chitwan National Park (CNP).[break]

Ashy Minivet birds were first spotted by field ornithologists Badri Chaudhari and Hathan Chaudhari for the first time in KTWR on November 19. Birds of this species have been spotted by other ornithologists several times in KTWR this year.

According to the NRBC chairman Suchit Basnet, Ashy Minivet is considered as a migrant bird in Nepal. Ornithologist Dr Hem Sagar Baral said birds of Ashy Minivet species entered Nepal through north India this winter while expanding their geographical territory.

Indian vultures are found especially south of Gangetic plains in the Indian subcontinent and sometimes reach up to east of Pakistan, say ornithologists.
