The group of over 10 dacoits was trying to loot cattle from the village when Lalji Sardar, 50, and Chandradev Yadav, 32, retaliated against it and were subsequently killed when the group opened fire on them, Deputy Superintendent of Police Rajendra Dhakal said. They died on the spot.
The dacoits made away with 11 animals from the village.
Demanding security, locals held demonstrations from Wednesday morning. They alleged that police did not respond to their call for help despite being informed on time. During the protests, they even tried to snatch the weapons of the police and clashed with them.
Irate locals also vandalized and torched a vehicle of Armed Police Force. Police fired more than 25 shots in the air, apart from some tear gas shells, to contain the mob, DSP Dhakal said.
Police used force to get hold of the bodies after villagers prevented them from doing so. Tensions subsided after police took away the bodies.
