BIRATNAGAR, Oct 2: The police on Tuesday evening arrested two persons, including an Indian national, on the charge of selling firearms in Biratnagar sub-metropolis.

According to the Morang District Police Office, Arjun Sah, 32, of Sahebgunj VDC in Sunsari and Abdul Kadir of Narpatgunj Thana from India were caught red-handed near Gudri market while they were trying to land a deal with a group of local residents to sell pistols and magazines. [break]

The police have confiscated two automatic pistols, magazines with five rounds of KF 7.65 bullets and a motorbike (Ko. 13Pa. 7130) used by the duo.

A spokesperson of the District Police Office, Deputy Superintendent of Police Deepak Pokharel, said that security personnel were deployed immediately after they were tipped off about the ongoing illegal deal.

“We knew dealing of firearms was taking place in one of the blind alleys in the market area, but we didn´t know the exact location. Our special sources helped us tracked them down,” added DSP Pokharel.

Speaking during a press meet at the District Police Office, DSP Pokharel revealed that the two used to operate their trade from hotels and lodges, and were later compelled to come to the street after the police started to tighten the noose around them.

“As a result of the tightened security, they got into our grip,” he said. Both have been charged with illegally dealing in arms and ammunition.

He further said that the factual motivation behind the dealing of firearms will be revealed only after the completion of investigation.

Asked if they were selling the firearms to the parties that want to disrupt the upcoming Constituent Assembly election, he said, “Well there could be many motives behind it, but let´s not jump into any conclusion. We have just started interrogating them.”

Meanwhile, one of the police officers involved in the operation said Kadir is the kingpin.

“If you pay him Rs 50,000, he can deliver a high-tech firearm in no time. His network of firearm smuggling is spread across the country,” said the police officer.
