Minister for Information and Communications Krishna Bahadur Mahara said in Dang on Tuesday morning that NA could recruit personnel in the vacant posts in its ranks. “New recruitment cannot be done but appointments in vacant post can be discussed,” Mahara said.
On Monday, speaking in Chitwan, Mahara´s party and cabinet colleague Defense Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa categorically said the NA had to stop all recruitment. “We have already given the order. The army should follow the order of the government and halt the recruitment process.” [break]
Thapa had said that the Chief of the Army Staff Rookmangud Katawal should furnish clarification to the government over why the recruitment could not be stopped following a government order.
Mahara also said that there was no such conflict between the government and the NA as reported in the media.
The army headquarters had begun the process of recruitment of 2,884 soldiers in the NA. Most of the vacancies relate to support staff.
The NA had already written to the Defense Ministry about three months ago about the recruitment and followed it up with telephone communication.
However, neither the prime minister or Defense Minister reacted to it nor did they oppose the recruitment move then. Both the PM and the defense minister spoke only after one of the Maoist PLA commanders Chandra Prakash Khanal opposed it during a rally in Butwal recently. Khanal had said that PLA too would recruit new combatants if the Nepal Army went ahead with its plan.
