We meet Theo (voiced by Ryan Reynolds), a racing fanatic who stays glued at the television screen watching the races of his idol racer Guy Gagne (voiced by Bill Hader).
Given Theo’s limitations as a snail, speed is way out of his league, but Theo has an active imagination wherein he fantasizes about blazing cars and neon-lit circuit tracks. In the real world though, he spends time plucking out tomatoes with his reasonably practical brother Chet (voiced by Paul Giamatti) at a plantation, which they’ve named “The Plant”. Theo gets constantly ridiculed in his snail community for keeping those high-octane pursuits; however it’s hard to kill his raw enthusiasm. And when a freak chemical accident grants him miraculous abilities to race fast, Theo goes all Spider-Man to adapt according to his newfound powers. The uniqueness of the film ends there and from then on, the movie follows the obvious tale of underdog triumph as the sluggish Theo transforms into the swift Turbo.
Turbo showcases brilliant voice works from its entire cast that include the likes of Samuel L Jackson, Michael Pena and Ken Jeong. It fills in all the criteria that you expect in a regular 3D flick but what it misses is the originality in its approach for catering something new. Turbo’s still worth a shot and kids will surely enjoy it.
