The Kathmandu Valley Road Improvement Project (KVRIP) under Department of Road (DoR) has planned to widen the three kilometer road section from current 16m to 22m. The road section is one of the busiest in the Valley.
“From Sunday, we will mark the houses built illegally alongside the road section. Once the houses are marked, house owners should start clearing that part of their house which has been built encroaching on government land,” said Bhai Kaji Tiwari, commissioner of KVDA for Kathmandu district.
He said all such structures within 11m distance on either side of the road will be demolished.
Nepalgunj-Kohalpur road expansion stalled for four months
KVDA plans to demolish illegal structures on the road by the end of the current fiscal year so that DoR can start upgrading the Tripureshwar-Kalanki road from the beginning of next fiscal year.
Currently, the road is 12m wide with 2m wide footpath on either side. But after the expansion, the road section would be 18m wide with 2m wide footpath on either side of the road, according to DoR.
“There are so many offices and shops along the section. With marking the structures, we will ask the house owners to ask their tenants to make alternative arrangement and demolish the part of the house that falls on road area. It may take some time, but we will meet our deadline. We will clear the road by the end of the fiscal year at any cost," said Tiwari.
Yogeshwar Krishna Parajuli, commissioner of KVDA, also said that KVDA will ask the house owners to remove illegal structures from Sunday. The expansion of the road stretch would considerably ease traffic congestion in the capital.
As part of the road widening drive, a bridge is being built by KVIRP over the Bishnumati River along the Kalimati-Teku road stretch.
