KATHMANDU, OCT 20: The Department of Transport Management (DoTM) on Wednesday handed over 200 units of devices, which can read smart license cards, to the Nepal Traffic Police.
The devices will help the traffic police to monitor the vehicle riders effectively. As of now, the DoTM has issued 2.95 million smart license cards, while the traffic police has only 40 card reading machines.
In addition to this, the department has also provided 200 units of secure application module (SAM) cards to the traffic authority. The SAM card can help secure authentication against smart cards. The total cost of card readers and SAM cards is Rs 8.41 million.
Ishwori Dutta Paneru, spokesperson of the DoTM, said the traffic authorities will bring into use the card readers from Thursday. According to him, it is one of the parts of the government’s programs to upgrade information and communication-related technologies being run under the grant support of the Asian Development Bank.
