Akali Mahoto, a local farmer, said that she was involved in tomato farming with her neighbors by jointly leasing around 34 ropanies of land. “It requires a lot of hard work but I am happy with the production,” she said.

Mahato said tomato production could have been better had there been timely monsoon. She said each 10 ropanies of land yielded an income up to Rs 300,000.

According to district agriculture office of Sarlahi, tomatoes have been cultivated in more than12.5 hectares of land in the northern areas of the district.

Bijay Kumar Mandal, information officer at the office said, “We are aware that the production this season has been encouraging.”
