Toddler rescued unharmed after 12 days of abduction

JANAKPURDHAM, Sept 15: A 15-month-old boy, who was abducted from Bideha municipality in Dhanusha district nearly two weeks ago, has been rescued unharmed, police said.



The toddler, Siddhanta Mahato, son of Kamlesh Mahato of Bideha Municipality-6, was abducted on September 3.


Police rescued him from a no-man's-land area in Bideha Municipality-1 on Monday night, according to the District Police Office (DPO), Dhanusha.

At a press conference organized by the DPO, Dhanusha, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Om Prakash Khanal said that police arrested Punita Devi Paswan of Kamala Municipality-9, Dhanusha, while she was attempting to flee after abandoning the child.


Following information about the abduction, police launched a search and investigation operation, deploying a trained sniffer dog to trace the boy.


The police team reached the location where the child was being held. Paswan allegedly attempted to escape after leaving the boy behind but was apprehended by the police.


The rescued boy has since been reunited with his parents, police informed.


Meanwhile, a case has been registered against the arrested woman on charges of abduction, hostage-taking and human trafficking.


Further investigation into the case is underway, police said.
