KATHMANDU, Dec 28: Chairman of the Tarai Madhes Democratic Party (TMDP) Mahantha Thakur on Monday said the Maoist declaration of an autonomous state in the Tarai is an ´unconstitutional´ move.

Talking to media persons at a function organized to mark the second anniversary of the founding of the party, Chairman Thakur said TMDP would not accord validity to such a declaration by the Maoists.

"The decision violates the Comprehensive Peace Accord and the spirit of the Interim Constitution," said Thakur. "Our party does not recognize the Maoist declaration."

Protesting the Maoist declaration of Madhes autonomous states that include 11 Tarai districts, Nepal Sadbhawana Party (NSP) said on Sunday that it would declare a Madhes state comprising all 22 Tarai districts. The Madhes state would include five sub-states.

Asked if TMDP would follow suit, Thakur said they would not go for such a decision as the elected Constituent Assembly is currently working to determine the upcoming federal structure of the country.

TMDP is one of the coalition partners of the Madhav Kumar Nepal-led government. Referring to the Maoist allegation that the current government was nothing but a ´robot´ and ´puppet´ of India, Thakur said, "Maoist Chairman Dahal´s speech has made it clear who the real puppet is."

Thakur asked the Maoists to come to a consensus as strikes would not help resolve the political deadlock in the country. "The indefinite general strikes that the Maoists have announced are pointless," he said. "The Maoists should come to a consensus, withdrawing all their protest programs."

Speaker Subas Nembang, Deputy Prime Minister Bijaya Kumar Gachchhadar, ministers and leaders of various political parties were present at the function to congratulate TMDP on the occasion of its second anniversary.

When TMDP Chairman Thakur broke away from the Nepali Congress to form the regional party, he was joined by leaders of various other parties including the NC, CPN-UML, Rastriya Prajatantra Party and Rastriya Janashakti Party.
