The prime minister has been mandated to recommend three candidates for National Assembly within Sunday. With the completion of the upper house elections, 56 members have already been elected.

The left alliance, which is poised to lead the next government, has been mounting pressure on the government against appointing the three remaining members to the upper house claiming that an outgoing government does not have such authority.

Amid the controversy, Friday's cabinet meeting has authorized the prime minister to recommend three National Assembly members. “The prime minister will pick the candidates by Sunday,” said Commerce Minister Min Bahadur Bishwakarma.

According to Article 86 of the Constitution, seven provinces elect eight members each to the upper house whereas the government recommends three members.

Meanwhile, the government has decided to honor nonagenarian poet Rastrakavi Madhav Prasad Ghimire with honorary brigadier general of Nepal Army.
