Three die in motorcycle-truck collision

LAHAN, April 10: Three people were killed in a motorcycle-truck collision in Bhotiya Tol Chowk of Lahan Municipality -13 along the East-West Highway.

LAHAN, April 10: Three people were killed in a motorcycle-truck collision in Bhotiya Tol Chowk of Lahan Municipality -13 along the East-West Highway. A total of 60 people have died in Siraha due to road accidents in the last nine months.


Krishna Sahani, 26, Shiv Kumar Sahani, 25, and Manoj Kumar Mandal, 26, who were travelling on a motorcycle (Sa 9 Pa 737), were hit by a truck (Na 3 Kha 7774), which was heading toward the opposite direction. As informed by Inspector Milan Singh Basnet of the District Traffic Police Office, Siraha the accident occurred on Monday night. The three victims reportedly died on their way to the hospital.

With the increasing number of vehicles as well as growing population, the number of road accidents is reported to be on the rise throughout the country. A traffic police team lead by SSP Purna Chandra Joshi had made several field trips to draw a sensible conclusion about accident patterns. After thorough investigation and collection of data, the team had finally come up with a plan to conduct eye sight and blood pressure check-ups for drivers of heavy vehicle.


The traffic police collected data for five months since the beginning of the current fiscal year in order to come up with the health check-up plan mentioned above. Out of the 5404 accidents that occurred within this period, 3947 were caused due to the drivers' carelessness. Meanwhile, 986 accidents were caused due to drunk driving, and 86 due to technical faults in the vehicles. Similarly, 52 accidents occurred due to the state of the road and 13 due to bad weather. The traffic police informed that 96 accidents occurred while overtaking and 928 were due to over-speeding. Only one accident was caused due to the use of a mobile phone.


Several measures are being taken to reduce accidents in Nepal. However, the number is ever increasing.
