KATHMANDU, Dec 15: A three-day medical expo attended by participants from Nepal, India, China, Israel and Pakistan, among others, kicked off in the capital city on Friday. It is the third international medical show being organized in Nepal.

According to the organizer, there are more than 200 stalls showcasing medical and surgical equipment at the exhibition.

Speaking at the inauguration session of the exhibition, Minister of State for Health and Population, Dr Surendra Kumar Yadav, said that the state lacks the regulating body for the medical and surgical equipment. “A regulatory body for this sector like the one for medicines is inevitable in the country,” he said.

“The government is planning to open 109 new hospitals at the local units,” he said. “There are only 25,000 beds available in all hospitals including government and private ones for the population of 30 million in the country,” he added.

Suresh Ghimire, president of the CHEMSAN, said the expo would play a vital role in providing opportunities to the hospitals in order to adopt new technologies and equipment.Dr  Mukti Ram Shrestha, president of Nepal Medical Association, said that the organizer should keep on organizing such expos as they help improve the medical sector. “Such programs help inform us about new technologies and inventions,” he added.

This is a specialized show for medical, surgical, diagnostics and other healthcare industries, according to the organizers. The largest event of its kind, the Nepal Medical Show, brings together healthcare leaders from a variety of disciplines to collaborate and learn.

The main objectives of the Nepal Medical Show include medical and surgical, clinical and diagnostic hospital infrastructure, medical tourism, medical science and technology. It has offered the exhibiting companies an opportunity to not only present their innovations, products and services but also meet with the key decision makers and find orders, according to the organizers.

The organizers said the expo has also allowed professional visitors to gain comprehensive information about the developments in focal industries. "Nepal Medical Show has provided one of the best platforms to dealers/distributors, doctors, pathologists, surgeons, hospital administrators, R&D heads, and medical directors to interact directly with the manufacturers," said the organizers.
