Three arrested for electricity theft in Kapilvastu

KAPILVASTU, August 12: Three people have been arrested for stealing electricity in Kapilvastu. 

A team of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) deputed to check leakage of electricity arrested two people from Yashodhara Rural Municipality-5 and the other from Kapilvastu Municipality-5, Babhani. They were subsequently handed over to police for necessary action.

After the increase in electricity leakage, NEA Taulihawa Distribution Center had started a campaign to control the leakage since Sunday. The leakage control team of more than 25 people that includes electrical workers, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force personnel has been mobilized to control electricity leakage in the district. 

Chief of Taulihawa Distribution Center, Rajesh Kumar Jha arrested a 16-year-old person of Yadav surname from Kapilvastu Municipality-5 and two people with the Salam and Ali surname from Ramanagara village of Yasodhara Rural Municipality-5. They were illegally using electric wire to hook the central power line to steal the electricity.

The NEA team has also recovered a refrigerator, an LCD TV, two weighing machines and 1 irrigation motor and electric wires from their house. All three arrested belong to well-to-do families in the village.

Jha said that the line will be cut for customers who have not paid their electricity bills for more than 60 days and who have more than Rs 10,000 in arrears. He said that the three arrested persons will be punished according to the Electricity Leakage Control Regulation 2059 BS.

There are more than 65,000 customers in Taulihawa Distribution Center. There are reports that a large number of locals in the villages of Mayadevi, Yashodhara and Suddhodan rural municipalities are involved in stealing electricity by using homemade devices.
