KATHMANDU, April 28: Going abroad these days has become one of the greatest achievements among Nepali youths. In whatever visa, they are ready to leave the country as soon as possible.

The Western and European world have become the number one choice for them.[break]

Why is the craze for going abroad increasing by leaps and bounds? Why don’t people vacillate to spend huge sums of money to go abroad? What are the factors that push the youths out of the nation?

The first and the foremost factor is the growing political instability. The country has become a land of corruption, insecurity, abduction, robberies, and so on.

Only those who are the sycophants of the political leaders are accepted as qualified, and those with talents are discarded and are bound to leave the nation in search of their future. Thus, there is brain drain in the nation.

The second factor is the luxurious western-style life. People think that when they go abroad, they make good money and their standard of life goes up in no time.

But the situation is reverse. The people who were in high positions and were making reasonable amounts money don’t find satisfaction after landing in a foreign land.

They might have thought that they could hold the same position and dignity as they did back home. But their dreams don’t always materialize abroad. If they choose not to upgrade their study, their life may end up with a low-level job.

Another cause of craze for going abroad is the western quality of education and making money by side job. But again, the situation may not favor except some of them.

When any youth lands in an extremely new land with heavy loads of loan, he is bewildered in the new culture, new language, and new style of teaching in the class and financial anxieties.

The fee structure for international students is almost four times as high asa in comparison to domestic students. Thus, paying the tuition fee, cost of living, and other expenses compel them to work illegally which, certainly, harms his study.

I have seen many international students not being able to pass a single paper in a semester. Only those students who have landed under scholarship program or those whose parents support them have done well in academics.

Going abroad has become a fashionable thing among the youths. If they are not successful in getting visas to foreign countries, then they may think that there is something wrong in them.

Parents also do not think about their financial background but get loan and send their sons and daughters abroad.

While on one hand, the nation is facing the problem of brain drain, on the other, its efficient youths waste away their lives in foreign lands.

Thus, the authorities concerned should think about this on time. One should have a life jacket before diving into the ocean, especially if one doesn’t know how to swim.
