Texting trend amongst girls

KATHMANDU, June 8: It seems these days that sending text message or ´texting´ is more popular than ever. Youths today, girls especially, text more than guys and enjoy the company of their cell phones more than anything. It looks like texting is the new ´in thing´ for girls out casting even the making calls usage.

Tsering Dolma, 20, agrees that the number of text messages she sends is far more than the number of calls she makes.[break]

"I frequently text my friends. In an average I send around six text messages," she says. Tsering explains that sending a message is much cheaper than making a call and its quick and you don´t have to worry about the network congestion.

Anjana Chapagain, 20, agrees with Dolma and says that since students have limited money, recharging their phones is sometimes troublesome. Sending a message costs only around a rupee and so it is dead popular among youths, she explains.

"When you make a call, it generally costs around three to four rupees but if you text you can communicate with four friends with the same kale," she smiles.

These girls also blamed the network problem of the telecom companies. They said that due to the unclear sound reception they are not able to finish their talk in a minute or two and in such a situation text message proves itself as a savior.

The girls so far have been very convincing in the need to be sending a message, but the boys however blame the girls of taking a bit too much advantage of their texting facility.

Pranav KC, 19, says, "Maybe text message service is a bit easier than making calls through a forever busy network but girls seem glued to their cell phones. They are texting all the time." Pranav here is not alone. The boys seriously seem to take it that girls´ texting may be a bit too much.

And we are not the ones saying it. Similar to Pranav is Bhavesh Adhikari´s complain and may be he is a bit more affected. The 22-year-old whines about how his girlfriend is constantly typing even when they are on a date.

"She seems busy all the time. Every hour she receives at least a text from one of her girlfriends and she will not be at peace until she replies," he frowns.

His girlfriend Shusmita, counters and says that guys meet and hang out all the time. Girls, however, she explains stay at home most of the time. "We like to sit at home unlike the guys who act as if they would suffocate if they stay even a single day." Because girls don´t meet all the time, they text to stay in touch she, explains.

Another reason why girls use the SMS facility more frequently according to them is because they like to plan out each and every thing, unlike boys, who can just get up and go without any plan of action.

Anjana elucidates that girls like to discuss every detail and only then decide whether it be a party or a class test. "We girls like to make sure that everyone has a clear picture of whatever is going on," she says. Guys, on the other hand, she adds, will end up completely unprepared on every occasion. They come unread to a test and improperly-dressed to a party. "They don´t text too much you see," she says with a cunning smile.

Whatever may be the reason, girls, although with frowning faces, do agree that they text a lot more than guys. OK, they may have their reasons or compulsions; we are definitely not complaining.

Girls go ahead and make use of your cell phones as much as you feel like. There is no stopping you!
