The Temporary Teachers´ Struggle Committee has given May 1 deadline to the government to address their demands, failing which tougher protest programs would be announced, said Ram Chandra Adhikari, chairman of the struggle committee.[break]
Adhikari warned that the temporary teachers would begin another phase of protest programs boycotting the classes at public schools across the country indefinitely after April.
The committee has been launching phase wise protests to pressurize the government after the Teacher´s Service Commission (TSC) opened vacancies for 14,000 teachers´ posts that were vacant since 2006. The government had appointed 17,000 temporary teachers bewteen April 2006 to April 2012. However, the TSC has given the opportunity to participate in free competition to only those temporary teachers who were appointed before 2006. The teachers have also protested the government move to include temporary teachers appointed seven years before.
“We will halt classes in all community schools if the government does not proceed to make all the temporary teachers permanent,” said Adhikari. The temporary teachers´ committee is also picketing Singhadurbar on Monday and Tuesday, he added.
Meanwhile, the Office of the Controller of Examinations, which aims to publish the SLC results within three months of the examination, is facing a budget deficit to accomplish the task on time. The teachers´ protest is likely to affect the timely publishing of the SLC results.
“Temporary teachers will not step back this time as it is do or die situation for us,” said Adhikari.
