KATHMANDU, Sept 21: The agitating doctors at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) haven´t returned for outpatient department (OPD) service and paid-service till Sunday. The Faculty Doctors´ Association (FDA) at TUTH is on strike since August 30 demanding quotas for their children in the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program of the TUTH.[break]

“They have yet to return to (OPD) service and paid-service in the afternoon,” said hospital director Dr Keshav Prasad Singh.

According to sources, the FDA held a meeting over the issue but FDA officials refused to speak to myrepublica.com calling its coverage of the issue biased and one-sided. “We don´t care what you write. We will not speak to you now. We will talk to only if we decide to organize a press conference,” said Dr Govinda KC, an FDA official.

FDA President Dr Modnath Marahatta did not answer our calls while President of Nepal University Teachers´ Association, Maharajgunj chapter Dr Kabir Nath Yogi had refused to comment when myrepublica.com contacted them for the story on the issue last Wednesday.

Campus Chief of the Maharajgunj Campus Dr Ram Prasad Uprety had said that the FDA representatives had asked for time to discuss the issue with their colleagues during the meeting with management, students and other staff on Friday.

“We had tried to convince to call off their strike as the management was prepared to address some of their demands. We also told them it was impossible to increase quotas this session which is scheduled to start from November 16,” Dr Uprety said.

The FDA has been demanding quotas for doctors´ children, promotion, training, transparency at the Institute of Medicine (IOM), benefits, residence and provision for visiting professors, among others. The management had tried to address the issue through the faculty board meeting, but the Academic Council of TU had rejected it under pressure from students, saying that such a decision would affect other institutions under the TU.

The doctors, however, have returned to teach at the Maharajgunj Campus on September 15.
