The decision was made as party chairman Upendra Yadav and parliamentary party leader Bijaya Kumar Gachchhadar are in bitter dispute over whose – parliamentary party’s or central committee’s – decision should be implemented for joining the CPN-UML-led government.
While Yadav argued that the party should follow central committee’s decision, Gachchhadar said parliamentary party’s decision should prevail.
Chairman Yadav and parliamentary party leader Gachchhadar agreed to forward the dispute to the task force amidst pressure from party cadres that the differences could lead the party toward split, according to its central leader Pramod Kumar Gupta.
The task force includes party chairman Yadav, co-chairman JP Gupta, Gachchhadar, Ram Sahaya Yadav and Sarat Singh Bhandari.
Earlier, the parliamentary party meeting had decided join the Madhav Kumar Nepal-led government under the leadership of Gachchhadar.
There was fear among party cadres that the party could head toward split as Gachchhadar threatened to defy the party’s central committee decision if he was not allowed to head the party’s team in the government.
Talking to journalist earlier Saturday afternoon while the central committee meeting was under way, Gachchhadar said he would write a note of dissent on the decision if it went against what the parliamentary party decided earlier.
“If the central committee takes a decision contradicting the parliamentary party’s decision, it will be objectionable and unfortunate,” said Gachchhadar, hinting that he could split the party.
Altogether 32 of the total 53 Constituent Assembly (CA) members had given signature in his favor to join the UML-led government. He spoke to journalists after party chairman Yadav threatened disciplinary action against him for deciding to join new government without decision by the central committee.
Nepali Congress (NC), CPN-UML, Tarai-Madhes Democratic Party (TMDP) and Sadbhabana Party (SP) on Friday had jointly decided to accept MPRF´s parliamentary party decision to join the government under Gachchhadar’s leadership. Chairman Yadav claimed Saturday that the party has not made any decision as to who would lead the party in the government. “Everyone must respect the party’s decision,” he said. “This applies even to me.”
Talking briefly to mediapersons on the sidelines of the party’s central committee meeting, Yadav condemned the four major political parties´ decision to accept Gachchhadar’s proposal. Yadav also warned of rethinking the party’s support to the UML-led government.
The fourth largest party in the Constituent Assembly, the MPRF had played a key role in garnering majority in the House in favor of the coalition government.
The central committee meeting concluded late in the night.
