Tarai villages inundated, one dead

LAHAN, Aug 17: Three villages in Siraha have been completely flooded due to the rise in water levels in various rivers. The Siraha Red Cross said Monday that Harkatti VDC 1, 2 and 3 in Siraha are completely under water due to flooding in the Gagan river due to continuous rainfall. [break]



A team including CDO Gehanath Bhandari and Siraha Red Cross President Rajdev Yadav inspected the flooded area on Monday afternoon, according to Red Cross official Ashok Yadav. The damage caused by the floods have yet to be assessed, the Red Cross said.



Also, the water from Gagan river is said to have entered Daraihia, Aurahi, Sukhipur, Tulsipur and other villages.



The water level along the main road linking Lahan to East-West Highway is about 4 feet. This has halted traffic movement.



Meanwhile, Bahuri Chaudhary drowned due to flooding in Chapin river in Saptari, the District Police Office said Monday.



Dozen VDCs inundated in Dhanusha



Continuous rainfall since last week has inundated over a dozen VDCs in Dhanusha, according to our Janakpur correspondent Suresh Yadav.



Most settlements and government offices in Janakpur are waterlogged. There is two to three feet of water around District Administration Office (DAO), Regional Police Office, Land Revenues Office, and Janakpur Cigarette Factory, among others. In many settlements, the ground floors of houses have becomes uninhabitable, according to DAO, Dhanusha.



Houses in Kishori Nagar, Bhanu Chowk, Namuna Basti, Kataiya Chowri, Shantinagar, Rajaul, Wakiltole and Pulchowk, among other areas, have been flooded with up to four feet of water.



With the inundation of roads in the rural areas, vehicles were unable to reach the district headquarters on Monday. The track roads in rural areas are completely damaged by the flood.



The Nepal Red Cross said a dozen VDCs have been inundated by the flood in the district. Water has overflowed from Baluwa, Jalad, Jagdhar and Kamala canals and entered the VDCs. Some three dozen families from various villages have been displaced and are seeking refuge in nearby schools. If rainfall does not stop, some 2,000 families will need to be evacuated, according to the Red Cross.
