Satish Mehta, joint secretary at the Ministry of External Affairs of India, and Kamalraj Pandey, joint secretary at the Ministry of Physical Planning and Works (MoPPW), led their respective countries in the meeting Monday.[break]
According to Pandey, the meeting decided to immediately initiate construction of Dhangadhi-Satibhajiniya (61 km) and Lamki-Tikapur-Khagrela (37 km) roads.
The project aims to construct a total of 605 km (19 roads) in different Tarai districts. Officials of both the countries are visiting the construction sites in Dhangadhi district on Tuesday.
“Construction of the two roads will begin in December as the process of selecting contractors has already been completed. We are also planning to award contract for other remaining roads by February, 2011 before starting construction by March,” Guru Dhakal, senior engineer of the project, told Republica.
The Indian government has decided to provide around Rs 11 billion for the construction of roads and Nepal government is funding for construction of 40 bridges, providing compensation to land owners and clearing electricity poles as well as other barriers along the roads.
