Two fire engines from Jhapa and Illam districts doused the fire with help from Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force personnel and the locals.
According to Red Cross Society, Taplejung, some of the fire victims have taken shelter at their neighbors' while others have been staying in the buildings of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) and Red Cross Society.
Chief District Officer (CDO) Damaru Prasad Niraula informed that the local administration has been providing the victims with immediate relief materials such as food grains, oil and salt, among others. Authorities have yet to ascertain the loss incurred in the fire, he added.
Rescuers managed to bring out some materials from the blazing houses. However, thefts have increased, prompting the police to search for stolen materials in the nearby areas.
The fire has also burnt admit cards of 10 SLC students.
CDO Niraula said those students will be provided with alternative admit cards so they can take exams.
No human casualties were reported but four dozen buildings, including those housing three government offices and half a dozen non-governmental organizations were damaged in the fire.
