KATHMANDU, Aug 7: The Supreme Court (SC) has paved the way for the government authorities to investigate against the then prime ministers Madhav Kumar Nepal and Baburam Bhattarai who were in lead position during the land embezzlement case of Lalita Niwas.

Issuing an order on Sunday, the apex court asked the authorities concerned to bring the prime ministers who headed the government during the transfer of the government land in the name of individuals in the Lalita Niwas case.

A joint bench of SC justices Anil Kumar Sinha and Kumar Chudal issued the order while hearing Yograj Paudel's habeas corpus plea.

“As the investigation so far focused only on the employees of the assigned level of work and those who purchased land, while leaving out those who made decisions or participated in the decision-making process from the scope of investigation, it also put the public trust in the entire judicial system at risk,” the SC has mentioned in its order.

The SC’s order further mentioned investigating officials to immediately begin investigation against those who were directly involved in the implementation level to bring the land of Lalita Niwas in the name of individuals on various dates, who submitted a proposal to make that decision at the ministry level or through the appointment of higher level officials or officials involved in the proposal.
