BIRATNAGAR, Nov 19: British Ambassador to Nepal John Tucknott on Friday said the UK government has been lending support to improve the political situation of Nepal and that the support should not be regarded as an intervention.

Speaking to mediapersons at Biratnagar airport, Tucknott said, “The UK government has been helping Nepal bail itself out of the political instability. Our continued support is for political stability.”[break]

Dismissing claims that envoys of India, the US and UK have been meddling in Nepali politics, he said, “I fully reject those claims. Our suggestions should not be taken as interventions.”

He opined that the conclusion of the peace process was necessary for political stability in the country, adding that political parties should focus on the conclusion of the peace process rather than participating in the prime ministerial race.

During his visit to east Tarai, Tucknott visited the Ilam-based Maoist cantonment. Ajay Das, aide to the envoy, said the PLA division commander and UNMIN representative had apprised Tucknott of the ex-combatants´ activities.

He had also visited Morang-based Sanischare Bhutanese refuge camp and posted his views that his government has not recent plans to resettle the refuges in the UK.
