In a joint resignation letter to the Local Development Officer (LDO) of the district, the VDC secretaries said extortion and rising security threats and threat of explosion at the working station by various underground outfits active in Terai have forced them to resign. [break]
According to Chairman of VDC Secretaries´ Association, Sanjiv Khadka, they are unable to return to their working station until security to them and their families is guaranteed by the government.
The VDC secretaries in the district have been getting death threats from several underground groups waging struggle in the district including the Jatiya Mukti Morcha. Such groups have been also warning of taking physical action on the families of VDC secretaries, according to Khadka.
However, LDO Prem Prasad Bhattarai promised to seek a solution to the problem faced by around 200 VDC secretaries of 49 VDCs in the district through coordination from the level of the chief district officer and other security bodies as soon as possible.
"I am committed to address the demands put forth by the VDC secretaries after holding discussion with the authorities concerned", said Bhattarai.
