Sugarcane growers demand price hike

SARLAHI, Aug 28: Farmers in the Sarlahi district have announced a phase-wise protest demanding that the price of their sugarcane be increased.



The farmers said they have announced protests before harvest time this year as similar protests in the past years which they launched during the harvest time yielded no results. [break]



According to the district coordinator of the farmers´ rights federation Deepak Mainali, they have submitted a 24-point demand to Indushankar Sugar Mills and given a week´s time to address their demands.



Mainali also informed that they would create obstruction at the mills from September 6 to 11 if the mills failed to meet their demands.



Their protests include staging sit in at the mills gates, holding protest rally and blocking the highway.
