KATHMANDU, Jan 27: Sugar producers have raised the price of sugar by up to Rs 14 per kg citing an increase in sugarcane price by the government.
According to the sugar producers, they have raised the factory price of the sweetener from Rs 72-76 per kg to Rs 82-90 per kg. With the revised price, consumers will now have to pay over Rs 100 to purchase one kilogram of sugar.
The sugar mills have been citing the recent government decision to increase the price of sugarcane to justify their decision to hike the price of their produce. The government has fixed the minimum support price of sugarcane at Rs 590 per quintal for this year, which is Rs 45.67 more than the last year’s floor price.
However, the manufacturers have increased the price of the finished goods by up to 19 percent despite a small increase in the price of raw material. According to the entrepreneurs, around nine kg of sugar can be produced by using one quintal of sugarcane.
