DHARAN, Jan 31: The Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoTCA) has begun a detail feasibility study (DFS) for the proposed Danda Ghopa Airport in Dharan, Sunsari district. A team of two technicians from a Kathmandu-based  private consultancy firm is conducting the survey.

Technicians said they will submit their report after studying the location, soil, air dimension, and other key parameters.[break]

Suman Thapa, one of the two engineers assigned to complete the study, said the study will focus on the geographical difficulties for the operation of the airport. “We will also study to make sure that the area of the airport can be extended for a medium-sized airport,” he added.

Locals said they hope the construction of the airport will begin soon as a detail survey is being conducted. Manoj Bhattarai, coordinator of the Airport Concerned Group, said, “We are ready to provide additional land and will create the best possible environment for the implementation of the project.”

The government is preparing to go ahead with the project under Buid-Operate-Own-Transfer (BOOT) model after the DFS report is submitted.

Yeti Incorproate had purchased 7 bighas of land from the locals and the municipality had separately set aside three bighas of land for the construction of the airport about seven years ago. However, the project was not being implemented after the government failed to take any initiative on the matter.
