The strike called by Nepali Jan Pragatishil Manch, whose name was unheard of until recently, crippled normal life in Biratnagar, Itahari, Dharan, Dhankuta, Damak, Birtamod, Kakadvitta, Ilam and Panchthar. [break]
Public vehicles, factories and educational institutions were brought to a complete standstill.
The Manch had distributed pamphlets on Monday evening, demanding assurance of peace and people-oriented constitution and employment. “They (striker enforcers) distributed pamphlets, and people complied with their decree,” said DIG Binod Singh.
Police had arrested four strike enforcers from Jhapa.
But, locals did not dare to defy the strike. This is the fourth consecutive strike in eastern Nepal.
Early this week, Tharu Kalyankari Sabha and Limbuwan organizations had imposed their strikes for three days.
