The strike against the vandalizing of medicine stores by some locals last Saturday has brought the Janakpur Zonal Hospital to a standstill, forcing the administration to put up a notice of the hospital´s closure on the door of the emergency ward.
The notice says that the normal functioning of the hospital has been affected by the closure of medical stores and advises people to take patients to other hospitals where the facilities are available; the notice also makes apologies for the discomfort caused to patients by the closure.
The locals had vandalized medical stores last Saturday accusing the doctors of negligence while they were treating motorcyclist Kailash Karki, who had met an accident, that led to his death. The medical entrepreneurs in turn have called an indefinite strike demanding action against the culprits and a guarantee of security.
The turmoil created has made life difficult for people seeking medical treatment. Sushil Kumar Yadav, 25, of Sinhasini-3, Mahottari, had to go to Dharan to treatment his fractured leg, after waiting for medicines in Jankpur for one-and-half days. “I don´t recall any strike that has closed all the medicine stores in the district in my 60 years,” says Sushil´s father Rajendra Prasad Yadav.
Similarly, Nathuni Pandit of Kathpulla, Hansapur had to go seven kilometers away from the town to Bagchauda to bring a bottle of saline, but he could not find other medicines there for his four-year-old son Raju who had suffered burns from cattle porridge.
